Vigevano is a hidden gem that still reveals little-known treasures: the Piazza Ducale is one of the most beautiful and harmonic squares in Italy, Castello Sforzesco is one of the largest city castles in Europe, the manufacturing companies in the shoe industry are appreciated all over the world for their innovation and quality, the Ticino River Park (just outside the town) allows to spend even only a few hours in contact with an unexpected nature. Located in a half-way point between the cities of Novara, Pavia and Milan, in a flatland area called Lomellina, land of castles and rice fields, Vigevano is a good choice for a stop for those who like cycling with no rush and discover natural landscapes and historical places,
Don’t forget to visit the International Shoe Musem, a tribute to the mastery of the artisans who made Vigevano great and one of the few museums of its kind in Italy and around the world. Also, do not miss the Leonardiana, an innovative itinerary through the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci that starts from his presence in Vigevano.
Those who look for quality food will enjoy tasting good risotto, sampling salame and traditional recipies based on goose or, when in season, try the local specialties such as frog legs, snails and Ticino’s little fried fishes.
In May and October the Palio delle Contrade takes place. The twelve contrade (city quarters), each representing an old profession, compete to win the palio. Don’t miss the magnificent parade that opens the contest with its 400 figures dressed with beautiful XV Century costumes representing the entire Ludovico il Moro court.
